Do you wonder if the water in our taps and rivers is safe or polluted? Do you want to know if farmers waste water, utilities charge too much, or bottled water destroys ecosystems? You're not alone in asking questions. The headlines say "drought, pollution, conflict and insecurity," but the stories offer few solutions. Living with Water Scarcity clarifies the connections among personal and social water flows in an accessible style. It describes the origins and costs of water scarcity and explains how to address it with fair and pragmatic policies. You and your community can live with water scarcity --- just manage water as the precious resource it is. Most Helpful Customer Reviews 5.0 out of 5 stars How water commodities are priced April 18th 2014 By Marilyn The first step in solving global water issues is to grasp what Zetland has succinctly organized for us: This reality of how water commodities are priced. 5.0 out of 5 stars Cool rhetoric on a hot-button topic September 5th 2014 By Ed Dolan Format:Paperback Whether it’s cowboys facing off over a muddy water hole in an old Western, or the dirty looks you get if you fill your supermarket basket with bottled water, no one ever denied that people feel strongly about water. Zetland explores hot-button water issues in a refreshingly pragmatic way. There are no “-isms,” no blanket condemnations of government or capital. Zetland does care about water—he cares passionately—but he keeps his rhetoric cool while he explains how government water managers have too often failed to do their job while markets, which have worked where they have been tried, need to be used more widely. Think of this not as a book about water, but as a parable that uses water to tell the larger story of living with scarcity. Every one of its themes has wider applications: How do we get the price right? How do we reconcile the conflicting purposes of people with very different ideas about how best to use scarce resources? What is the relationship between good government and good economics, and between human rights and property rights? How do we best balance benefits that are enjoyed privately with those that are enjoyed jointly through better communities and a better environment? Definitely worth a read. 5.0 out of 5 stars how to approach every day water challenges April 18th 2014 By robb morrow Format:Paperback I can say is it is a great read with unique approaches using applied economic thoughts to solve common water scenarios that we face every day!
