Lola Montès is a visually ravishing, narratively daring dramatization of the
life of the notorious courtesan and showgirl.
Presented in the form of a circus attraction recounting her scandalous past
in flashbacks presented by the bombastic ringmaster of the circus where she
ends up performing.

Max Ophüls’ final film, and first in colour, was a box-office flop. Later cut,
edited and rereleased the original film was as good as lost.

After 18 months of restoration, Criterion presents Lola Montès in its
original CinemaScope ratio with remastered 3 channel audio and recut
to match the 1955 premiere release; as Max Ophüls intended it to be seen.
