Lonnie Johnson With Elmer Snowden 1960 - Blues & Ballads (1990 Reissue) [EAC FLAC] Lonnie Johnson Lonnie Johnson in 1960 Wikipedia: Alonzo "Lonnie" Johnson (February 8, 1899 – June 16, 1970) was an American blues and jazz singer/guitarist, violinist and songwriter who pioneered the role of jazz guitar and jazz violin, and is recognized as the first to play an electrically-amplified violin. Elmer Snowden Elmer Snowden circa 1966 Wikipedia: Elmer Chester Snowden (October 9, 1900 – May 14, 1973) was a banjo player of the jazz age. He also played guitar and, in the early stages of his career, all the reed instruments. He contributed greatly to jazz in its early days as both a player and a bandleader, and is responsible for launching the careers of many top musicians. However, Snowden himself has been largely overlooked in jazz history. Blues & Ballads Format: CD, Album, Reissue Release Date: April 5, 1960, September 18, 1990 Producer: Chris Albertson Label: Prestige/Bluesville Catalog #: OBCCD-531-2 (BV-1011) Genre: Blues Styles: Acoustic Blues, Country Blues, Jazz Blues, Rhythm & Blues Duration: 44:00 AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow: This combination works quite well. Guitarist-singer Lonnie Johnson was just starting a successful comeback, and here he is teamed up with acoustic rhythm guitarist Elmer Snowden (who had not recorded since 1934) and bassist Wendell Marshall. Johnson sings smooth blues and sentimental ballads with equal skill, and both guitarists have opportunities to display their complementary but distinctive styles. Amazon.com review by Ted Drozdowski: This beautiful album was engineered by Rudy Van Gelder in his Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, home studio where so much jazz history was made. It features guitar innovators Lonnie Johnson and Elmer Snowden together for the first time--despite a friendship going back to the 1920s when both appeared on some of the earliest jazz and blues 78s. Johnson, the father of single-note six-string soloing, is in marvelous voice on this selection of blues, ballads, and jazz, crooning the double-entendre "Jelly Roll Baker" and the heartache-laden "Back Water Blues" (a Bessie Smith tune he first cut in 1927) with a marksman's sense of pitch and chilling nuance. Snowden serves mostly as accompanist. But these men play so closely that they seem to be sharing every breath. 01. Haunted House [5:02] 02. Memories Of You [4:23] 03. Blues For Chris [5:07] 04.
