FILM REVIEW; His Best Friend Falls for Her on Their Wedding Day

By LAWRENCE VAN GELDER

Leave it to the philosophical French to re-examine the romantic triangle in the light of the millennium.

But because the new epoch has yet to arrive, the conclusion reached by the inquiry that is ''Love Etc.,'' opening today at the Screening Room, can only be speculative.

Nevertheless, the triangle remains eternally fascinating, and whether or not the viewer is convinced by the resolution reached by ''Love Etc.'' in its final scene, on Jan. 1, 2000, getting there is more than half the fun; pondering what one would do in the shoes of its principal characters adds more.

This film, reminiscent of Truffaut's 1961 classic, ''Jules et Jim,'' tells the story of Benoit, a shy, staid bank employee who falls in love with Marie, a young woman he meets through a personals ad (using as bait a picture of Pierre, his best friend), marries her and slowly realizes that his friend has mounted a campaign to win her away.

Directed by Marion Vernoux from a screenplay by Dodine Herry and Ms. Vernoux adapted from ''Talking It Over,'' a novel by Julian Barnes, ''Love Etc.'' makes the most of convincing performances by Charlotte Gainsbourg, who won a Cesar nomination for best actress as the torn Marie; Yvan Attal as Benoit, who finds and loses the greatest happiness he has ever known, and Charles Berling as Pierre, the feckless, egocentric teacher of literature who has been Benoit's friend since their school days.

In the beginning, Benoit, in his early 30's, is overjoyed at his good fortune at winning Marie, a pretty art restorer in her mid-20's who is taken with his innate decency if not exactly swept away by love.

On their sunny wedding day, Benoit is pleased that things worked out for him. Marie tells herself that Benoit is good and kind and that he loves her. And Pierre suddenly realizes that he is in love with Marie.

''What is going to happen now?'' he asks himself.

Artfully treading a fine line between operatic tragedy and romantic comedy as it drips the poison of betrayal into the heady elixir of love, ''Love Etc.'' proceeds unwaveringly and with rising tension until it reaches its debatable denouement on the Channel coast at the advent of 2000.

''Love Etc.'' is at its best at raising questions and depicting how three ordinary people approach a solution to the personal mathematics of an age-old problem in relationships
