Londra, anno 1964. Durante la notte un ladro sta per entrare in un appartamento nel West End ma fa troppo rumore e il padrone di casa lo sorprende sul terrazzo. I due sono di fronte e il ladro, il giovane George, non sa come giustificarsi. Inaspettatamente l'altro, invece di denunciarlo alla polizia, lo invita a spogliarsi e a infilarsi nel suo letto. Questa inattesa proposta arriva dal proprietario, Francis Bacon, pittore affermato, figura molto nota negli ambienti omosessuali e intellettuali della città. Dopo quella notte, George rimane a casa di Francis come amico e amante. Il pittore lo conduce nei locali e nella vita notturna londinese, popolati da personaggi che amano parlare, esibirsi, atteggiarsi. Nascono allora gelosie, invidie, ripicche. Una sera Francis porta a casa un altro ragazzo, e George rimane fuori sotto la pioggia. Hanno un chiarimento e insieme vanno a New York, dove Francis espone, ma qui George minaccia di uccidersi. Ormai il rapporto si è incrinato. George non vuole seguirlo nella 'personale' organizzata al Grand Palais di Parigi. Mentre l'importante mostra si inaugura, George prende delle pasticche e muore. Nella stanza a Londra, Francis piange e riflette: tutto sta cadendo a pezzi, tutto sta morendo.
