Machaut - Chansons - Gothic Voices (1983) [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 247.02 MB)
DescriptionGuillaume de Machaut was quite possibly the first composer to draw international interest on a significant level. Born around 1300, we know considerably more about him than about many obscure Baroque composers, 400 years later. He lived a full and unusually long life, dying in 1377, producing a range of secular and sacred works, including what might be the first full mass ever composed by a single individual. The music on this album, however, concentrates on his secular songs, utilizing the formes fixes--the ballade, rondeau, and virelai. Many were laments in the fashionable school of Courtly Love, but others were relatively satirical and even risque, reminding us that Machaut, though a wealthy canon, claimed in one of his late works to be enjoying an affair with a 19-year-old girl, one Peronne d'Armentieres.
