Birinchi baba claims to have lived from the stone age onwards (when he relished roasted hippopotamus), trained Buddha and Jesus and Tulasidas! Gurupada is completely taken in and decides to get initiated. Birinchi Baba makes Gurupada's home his own and starts giving religious discourses to the rich and famous, much to the Dismay of Bunchki and her beau Satya (Satindra Bhattacharya). A desperate Satya turns to his rationalist friend and guide Nibaran (Somen Basu). How Nibaran exposes the fraudulent Godman is the story of "Mahapurush" Comments: "Mahapurush" is considered as one of Satyajit Ray's lesser films but is nevertheless a scathing comment on charlatans who pose as men of God. In the structure of a lighthearted comedy based on Parashuram's "Birinchi Baba", Ray tells us of the hypocrisy of the fake Godmen and the credulity of the people who patronise them. For, at the last, Birinchi Baba and his assistant turn out to be not only frauds but also thieves. Ray does not hit at religion though... His target is only those Godmen who use religion and the gullibility of believers to further their own nests. As a film, Mahapurush has very little except a fluid story telling (aided by some very good editing by Dulal Dutta). It springs no surprises and its handling of romance is also stereotyped, if subtle. What stads out is the superb portrayal of Birinchi baba by Charu Prakash Ghosh. I also liked Santosh Dutta as Professor nani, in a cameo role. He always had a fine sense of comedy and here too is delightful. The story is also sustained by the fact that Ray never lets the script become either slapstick or maudlin. It is a short film, just one hour and six minutes long. Uploader's Notes: I am uploading two ripped versions of the movie. The first is a 2.17 GB x.264 rip. The video quality is as good as any you will see on the net. The discerning may feel that is is a bit oversharpened. I have deliberately left a hint of grain in the rip. It is virtually unnoticeable in the brightly lit scenes, but adds to the detail in some parts and helps soften the sharpening effect a bit. You can see the impact of the grain in the first and fourth of the images uploaded. The sound is a full variable bit rate encode with Apple's QAAC encoder and you will enjoy the sound quality. I think I prefer the 4.7 GB XviD rip (This Thread) though. The image is slightly less sharp and thus a little more pleasing to the eye. Once again the impact of the slight grain is visible in some of the scenes. I have used AC3 as the sound and this is an internal conversion from the original PCM with no perceptible loss in qualty (please understand that this is a lossy conversion. I am not claiming lossless encoding). I'm merely saying that the difference between the original PCM and the AC3 sound is almost imperceptible. This XviD rip is for those who would like to burn the video on to a DVD disc and see it on a big screen with the family. If bandwidth is not an issue, go for this rip. For both the rips, the sample provided is of one minute exactly at the centre of the movie. If you wish you can download both samples, compare the rips and then choose. Be warned though that the difference is marginal and would interest only the connoisseur. IMDB Link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059417/ Related Torrents
