BIOGRAPHY:

Malkit Singh (born Boparai) MBE born in 1962 in village Hussainpur, Jalandhar, and raised in Nakodar, Jalandhar, Punjab. He is a famous foreign based Punjabi bhangra singer. Most famous for the songs "Gur Nalo Ishq Mita", "Tootak Tootak Tootiyan", "Kurri Garam Jayee", "Dekh li vilyait", as well as recently, "Chal Hun," and "Jind Mahi" from the blockbuster Bend It Like Beckham film soundtrack.


Awards and recognition

* In 1997, he was given the recognition of the city of Los Angeles for his service to the Indian community.
* Listed in the 2000 Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest selling bhangra artist of all time.
* In 2001, Singh was awarded the 27th Convocation Gold Medal Award Doctorate by Guru Nanak Dev University.
* Known as the unofficial "King" of bhangra and Punjabi folk music.
* Performed at UCLA's Bruin Bhangra, 2006
* Performed at the Hollywood Bowl, September 21, 2009.

Malkit Singh is credited as being one of the pioneers who brought Punjabi folk out from the fields and onto the world stage. From its humble Punjabi origins, Malkit has used Bhangra in cross-cultural experiments ranging from rap and house to Bollywood claiming the highest respect amongst Bhangra aficionados.

As a four-year-old, Malkit won admission into a school for six-year-olds thanks to his incredible singing ability. In the 1980s Malkit formed the band Golden Star to produce some of the ‘old skool’ Bhangra classics that continue to fill the dance floors today, including his trademark anthem ‘Tootak Tootak Thootian (Hey Jamalo)’.



Bhangra King, Pop Singer Malkit Singh honored with "Most Excellent Order of the British Empire" (MBE) - by British Government. Malkit Singh is most famous for the songs "Guru Nalo Ishq Mita", "Tootak Tootak Tootiyan", "Kurri Garam Jayee", as well as "Chal Hun ". Whilst "Jind Mahi" features in the blockbuster BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM soundtrack. He cites 'The Stone Roses' and the 80's Manchester music scene as one of his early influences.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry established on 4th June 1917 by King George V. Queen Elizabeth II will present this award at a spectacular ceremony with exclusive gathering. On the occasion of New Year Malkit Singh performed at Central London recently, he said during a telephonic conversation that "I am very much blessed with this honor, this honor is not only to me, but it's an honor to my entire community moreover to country India and I am feeling like I am on the moon."
