Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, & Lou Ann Barton 1990 - Dreams Come True [mp3@320] Marcia Ball Marcia Ball in 2011 Wikipedia: Marcia Ball (born March 20, 1949, Orange, Texas) is an American blues singer and pianist who was raised in Vinton, Louisiana. She was described in USA Today as "a sensation, saucy singer and superb pianist... where Texas stomp-rock and Louisiana blues-swamp meet." The Boston Globe described her music as "an irresistible celebratory blend of rollicking, two-fisted New Orleans piano, Louisiana swamp rock and smoldering Texas blues from a contemporary storyteller." Angela Strehli Angela Strehli in 2006 Wikipedia: Angela Strehli (born November 22, 1945, Lubbock, Texas, United States) is an American electric blues singer and songwriter. She is also a Texas blues historian and impresario. Despite a sporadic recording career, Strehli spends time each year performing in Europe, the US and Canada. Lou Ann Barton Lou Ann Barton in 2006 Wikipedia: Lou Ann Barton (born February 17, 1954, Fort Worth, Texas, United States) is an American blues singer based in Austin, Texas since the 1970s. Dreams Come True Artist: Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, & Lou Ann Barton Title: Dreams Come True Producer: Clifford Antone, Mac "Dr. John" Rebennak Release Date: 1990 Label: Antone's Records Catalog: ANT0014 Genre: Blues, Electric Texas Blues, Piano Blues, Louisiana Blues, Swamp Blues Duration: 40:15 AllMusic Review by Thom Owens: Dreams Come True is an all-star session by vocalists Marcia Ball, Lou Ann Barton and Angela Strehli. The three women sing with a band led by Dr. John and the session features guest appearances by such luminaries as David "Fathead" Newman and Jimmie Vaughan. The music is straight out of the Texas school of roadhouse R&B and blues boogie but it's delivered with a gritty, hearfelt edge, particularly on the part of the three vocalists. Dreams Come True may follow formula, but it's followed with style and affection, which makes it a very enjoyable listen. Amazon.com Review by Ted Drozdowski: Austin's leading ladies of contemporary blues team up for the best album ever on club-owner Clifford Antone's label. The songs mix Ike Turner gems with three Ball compositions, two from bassist Sarah Brown, and others by Harold Battiste and Lavelle White. Which means the accent is on old-fashioned hooks and harmonies, perfectly executed right from the opening Ike and Tina hit "A Fool in Love." All three women sing lead on that number, but otherwise they trade the spotlight. Ball's singing is tart 'n' sweet, with a hint of Texas dust. Her barrelhouse piano is the CD's most distinctive instrumental voice. And her "Snake Dance" is the biggest surprise, conjuring a New Orleans voodoo vibe. Strehli belts in clear, powerful tones--imagine Ma Rainey as a rocker. Barton sings sassy, with a slight sultry slur--also with the know-how to make "Good Rockin' Daddy" '50s perfect. Barton's career stalled after this 1990 session, while Ball and Strehli have continued to make excellent recordings. Grove Press Review by Frank John Hadley: This album, an exaltation of the Texas blues tradition, took longer to make than the Astrodome and reportedly involved more temper tantrums than you'd find in a week's worth of daytime soaps. Bolstered by the backing of keyboardist/guitarist/producer Dr. John and assorted Lone Star firebrands, each of the three Austin belles, singing either lead or harmony, concentrates emotion in her voice. Marcia Ball takes her wickedly understated approach, Lou Ann Barton tantalizes with lusty tones, and Angela Strehli's graceful phrasing exudes friendliness. The sagebrush trinity's rendition of Ike and Tina Turner's "A Fool in Love," in particular, delivers the shared joy of R&B harmonizing-bowie knives held to each other's throats or not. 01.
