Review:
Beautiful, if somber, score for the 'reverse-western' that is The Homesman

"The Homesman - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" (21 tracks; 46 min.) starts off with the somber "Main Title", giving us a heads up right away that this is not going to be a 'fun/funny' western (such as the recent "A Million Ways to Die In the West"). "On the Plains" plays as we see the endless Midwest plains, themselves almost a character of sorts in the movie (much of the movie plays out as the main characters travel eastwards through the plains). "Picking Up Arrabella Sours" continues the somber mood sounds (this plays as one of the three crazy women is picked up). "Bathtime" is a more upbeat and relaxed tune. "River Crossing" features a beautiful undercurrent of harp sounds. As you can tell from the number of tracks and the running time, most of these tracks are in the 2 min. range, some even barely a minute or so, where Beltrami simply provide a slight brush of music to capture a particular moment in the movie, and then moving on from there. But it doesn't detract from the listening experience of this, as the overall mood (restrained, somber) rarely changes. Please note: there are several songs in the movie, sung (and danced to) by the Tommy Lee Jones character, which are quite hilarious. They are NOT included in this soundtrack. The soundtrack concludes on a hopeful and more optimistic note with "End Titles", which then is followed by "Wind Haiku", which frankly I don't remember hearing in the theater, but sounds like it tries to capture the howling winds that are common in the plains. Bottom line: this is NOT a 'classic' western soundtrack, but instead a very nice, if restrained, orchestral score.

A quick note as to the movie: just as the orchestral score is not a 'classic' western soundtrack, so also is the movie itself not a 'western'. I'd call it a 'reverse-western', which is more a characters study than anything while they are trekking from Nebraska to Iowa. Tommy Lee Jones (who in addition to starring also directed, co-wrote and produced this) and Hilary Swank give powerful performances in this heavy duty movie.
Bottom line: "The Homesman", both the soundtrack and the movie, is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
