The music builds up slowly with dueling piano and strings, and then explodes. It becomes a thread throughout the entire score. "Natalia" really should be named "Natalia's Theme". There are quite a few pieces that are just in the 1 to 2 min. range, or even shorter, simply establishing the mood of that particular moment in the movie and then moving on (check out the dreamy "Who Done It", or the hard-charging "Mason Jarred", one of the soundtrack's better moments actually). There are also several almost epic tracks such as the 9+ min. mini-suite "Mira Mira on the Wall", which also shines (and features a few electronic tones as well). The tracks are listed in chronological order, which is great for the listening experience, but BEWARE, if you haven't seen the movie yet, you can almost make out the movie's entire story line just by looking at the track titles... The very last track "End Titles" is a bit misleading: yes, it does eventually play, but the song that is featured as the end titles start rolling actually is Aloe Blacc's "Ticking Bomb" (from his great new album "Lift Your Spirit"). For whatever reason it is not included in the soundtrack, which is unfortunate. But even with that omission, I still quite like this particular collection, which confirms once again Beltrami's reputation as one of the better movie composers of this generation.
