The Edible Woman, the first work of prose fiction by noted Canadian author/poet Margaret Atwood, is a forerunner of much of the feminist literature that would follow the theme of woman in search of individual identity and worthwhile meaning in her life. At the time of its release in 1969, the novel was a fresh approach to the presentation of women characters in fiction, an almost surreal type of feminist black humor. It is the story of a young woman, Marian, whose sane, structured, consumer-oriented world starts to slip out of focus. Following her engagement, Marian feels her body and her self are becoming separated. As Marian begins endowing food with human qualities that cause her to identify with it, she finds herself unable to eat, repelled by metaphorical cannibalism.
Atwood wrote The Edible Woman four years before its publication; since she created it before the momentum of the women's movement began to reach its potential Atwood has described the novel as "proto-feminist." While some of the themes of The Edible Woman now seem somewhat dated, it is still a much assigned book in higher secondary and post-secondary courses, and the charm of Atwood's rather dark humour and use of spectacular metaphor is both a highlight of the novel and a foreshadowing of her later fiction and poetry.
