Five Dolls for an August Moon was one of Bava's
most obscure films, and did not receive an
official American release until 2001 when Image
Entertainment distributed it on DVD. After the
Image disc went out of print, Anchor Bay
re-released as part of the "Mario Bava Collection
Volume 2" box set on 23 October 2007. The film
was released in France as L'île de l'épouvante /
Island of Terror.

AllMovie gave it two stars out of five, calling
it "a confusing and not terribly exciting
whodunit."

In 2013, Kino International released the film on
Blu-ray in the United States. In his commentary
track for the film, Mario Bava scholar Tim Lucas
argues strongly against Bava's own assessment of
the film as one of his worst and calls it one of
his most beautiful and innovative films.

STORY:

George Stark is a wealthy industrialist who
invites five business friends of his to his
remote Mediterranean island for a weekend of
relaxation and business when he introduces
them to Professor Farrell, a brilliant
chemist who gives investment ideas to the
group. But against Farrell's wishes, the
group goes behind each other's back to obtain
information on Farrell's chemistry ideas and
soon the guests and residents start turning
up dead one by one as Stark and Farrell must
rally the group together to determine the
identity of the killer (or killers) despite
nobody trusting anyone.
