Top-flight new boys Crystal Palace faced a difficult trip to the Britannia Stadium to play Stoke, who were looking to make a strong start at home under new manager Mark Hughes.

Elsewhere, Southampton hosted Sunderland, Everton played West Brom, Hull hosted Norwich, Newcastle took on West Ham, and Liverpool travelled to Aston Villa in the late kick-off.
