Robert Wyatt fundó la banda en octubre de 1971 después de dejar Soft Machine y grabar un álbum en solitario llamado The End of an Ear. En Matching Mole, continuó con su labor en la batería y como vocalista, y contrató al organista y pianista de Caravan David Sinclair, al guitarrista Phil Miller y al bajista Bill MacCormick de Quiet Sun. La pronunciación en inglés de este nombre produjo la denominación de la banda. Matching Mole was an English jazz rock band associated with the Canterbury scene. Robert Wyatt formed the band in October 1971 after he left Soft Machine and recorded his first solo album The End of an Ear. He continued his role on vocals and drums and was joined by David Sinclair, of Caravan, on organ and piano, Phil Miller on guitar and Bill MacCormick, formerly of Quiet Sun, on bass. The name is a pun on Machine Molle, the French translation of the name of Wyatt's previous group Soft Machine The opening track, "O Caroline," is indicative of Wyatt at his best: art rock with a human face, a playful vocal, and soul. Much of the record is instrumental improvisation, though, with the humor largely confined to the song titles ("Instant Pussy," "Dedicated to Hugh, But You Weren't Listening"). For every nifty passage (the extended melancholy Mellotron solo on "Immediate Curtain," the goofy scat vocals on "Signed Curtain"), there's equal or greater instrumental patter.
