Matteis - False consonances of Melancholy - Beyer, Gli Incogniti [Philidor; FLAC] (Size: 372.88 MB)
Description"I heard that stupendious Violin Signor Nichola (with other rare Musitians) whom certainly never mortal man Exceeded on that instrument, he had a stroak so sweete, & made it speake like the Voice of a man; & when he pleased, like a Consort of severall Instruments: he did wonders upon a Note: was an excellent Composer also. Nothing approch'd the violin in Nicholas' hand: he seem'd to be spiritato'd & plaied such ravishing things on a ground as astonishd us all." So wrote John Evelyn, diarist and writer, upon hearing Nicola Matteis in 1674. A temperamental violinist, one of the wave of fine Italian musicians that flowed out of the Italian States and set up shop everywhere, he was also an extremely fine one--"a great hand," as in one who was enormously skilled. His False Consonances are an example of his showmanship, the kinds of things he could do easily in concert, and published much as a group would their albums today, for sale in the lobby after they've been seen.
