Description



Johann Mattheson was a close friend of Handel's, and nearly his murderer--during a duel between the two hotheads, which was ended when Mattheson's sword was deflected off one of the buttons on Handel's waistcoat. The two became immediately reconciled, and it was Mattheson that translated into English the first important biography of Handel, after the latter's death. Mattheson's own music is international in style, combining aspects of the North German, Italian, and French schools to good advantage.
