Matti Koskiala - Rytmiikkaa

Matti Koskiala's "Rytmiikkaa" is proof that you can put just about anything on a record. This is an educational album for amateur drummers. Basically what you hear here is 40 minutes of drumming, sometimes accompanied by guitar, bass and piano. Koskiala introduces different drum beats, but doesn't speak a word during the record. He lets his drums do the talking, and the listener's duty is to listen to the drumming and imitate it.

Pianist Esa Helasvuo composed two pieces for this record, "Sininen", which is a blues tune, and "Kameleontti". These are used in various arrangements throughout the LP. The other musicians were Olle Wiberg on guitar and Pentti Mutikainen on bass.

With the LP a 16-page booklet was included, mostly containing the music for each different arrangement used.

"Rytmiikkaa" is made suitable for practically anyone interested in drumming. I can very well imagine this record being played in lots of music schools. Sad that "Rytmiikkaa" has vanished into the mists of time - perhaps a CD reissue should be appropriate? The LP was self-financed and self-released, so maybe Koskiala could arrange a reissue himself? :)
