(Contains movie and optional English, French subtitles. No menus or extras). Me and My Sister Review by David Stratton And now to familial tensions in ME AND MY SISTER, Martine, (Isabelle Huppert), lives in Paris with her rich but boring husband. She doesn't work, but passes the time quite happily with her snobby friends. And then an unwelcome reminder of her past arrives in the form of her sister, Louise, (Catherine Frot), who isn't like Martine at all. It's not just Louise's lack of dress sense that annoys Martine; she reminds her of their mother, whom Martine despises and won't talk to, and of a past in Le Mans - not the fashionable part of town - she'd rather forget. And then there's the book Louise has written, she's come to Paris to see a publisher about it. Martine hasn't even bothered to read it. Much to Martine's annoyance, the ingenuous Louise is warmly accepted by just about everyone around her, including her husband. This enjoyably bitchy comedy about two mis-matched sisters offers great roles for both Isabelle Huppert and Catherine Frot, and the actresses miss none of the opportunities provided. They're both terrific, Huppert as the uptight Martine and Frot as the blissfully naïve Louise. First time director Alexandra Leclere offers some sharp observations here, and includes a delicious scene in which the sisters singalong to a scene from Jacques Demy's THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT on television. Not a major comedy, perhaps, but a very engaging one. Sharing WidgetTrailer |
