Memorial Day, 1995. Wanneer de 13-jarige Kyle Vogel een koffer uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog vindt,
die van zijn grootvader Bud is, vertelt iedereen hem dat hij hem terug moet zetten. Kyle negeert dit echter.
Alhoewel Bud nooit over de oorlog heeft gesproken maakt hij een deal met zijn kleinzoon:
Kyle mag drie souvenirs pakken en Bud zal hem de verhalen erachter vertellen.
Hiermee krijgt Kyle niet alleen een kijk op het gecompliceerde oorlogsverleden van Bud
maar ook op de oorlogstijd die Kyle in de toekomst te wachten staat.
Terwijl de twee mannen hun parallelle ervaringen in de strijd delen komen ze ook tot het besef
hoe die magische dag op de veranda hun beide levens gevormd heeft.

When 13-year-old Kyle Vogel discovers the World War II footlocker belonging to his grandfather,
Bud, everyone tells Kyle to put it back. Luckily, he ignores them.
Although Bud has never talked about the war, he finds himself striking a deal with his grandson:
Kyle can pick any three souvenirs, and Bud will tell him the stories behind each one.
Memorial Day not only takes us on a journey into Bud's complicated wartime past,
but also into Kyle's wartime future. As the two men share parallel experiences in combat,
they come to realize how that magical day on the porch shaped both of their lives.
