Metallica is an American thrash metal band, and more generally of heavy metal founded in 1981 and originally from Los Angeles, California.

The current formation of the band consists of founding members James Hetfield (vocals, rhythm guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums) and guitarist Kirk Hammett, plus bassist Robert Trujillo, who joined the group in 2003.
The previous group members include Dave Mustaine (Megadeth founder member), bassists Ron McGovney (for demos), Cliff Burton (for the first three albums; died in 1986) and Jason Newsted.
