Il viaggio comincia da Venezia, una città unica al mondo: i suoi abitanti hanno contribuito a farla diventare una delle potenze economiche del passato, ma si sono sempre misurati con gli elementi della natura, sapendo che nulla era garantito per sempre, trasformando le debolezze in punti di forza. Guidati da Valerio Massimo Manfredi, scopriamo com’era piazza San Marco una mattina di centodieci anni fa, quando il celebre campanile di San Marco improvvisamente crollò, entriamo nelle stanze segrete e nelle vecchie prigioni di Palazzo Ducale, al tempo in cui i “signori della notte” dettavano legge sulla Serenissima, sbarchiamo su una delle più inquietanti isole abbandonate della laguna, quella dove c’era il Lazzaretto dei malati di peste e dove ancora oggi avvengono strani ritrovamenti, come quello dei resti del presunto “vampiro di Venezia”. Tutto ricostruito dalla troupe di Metropoli, con reenactment in costume ed effetti speciali in 3d. Le storie di Venezia sono anche lo spunto per raccontare temi universali e per scoprire le esperienze del mondo e le innovazioni del futuro, con i servizi dei nostri due inviati, la giornalista scientifica Elisabetta Curzel e l’astrofisico e blogger Amedeo Balbi. Dal mega-porto di Hong Kong da cui partono le merci cinesi che invadono il mondo, spiegato dall’inviato di Repubblica Federico Rampini, ai laboratori di Houston dove insieme alla Nasa si sperimentano le ultime frontiere delle nanotecnologie per la medicina. Saliamo anche su una nave della Marina Militare a Brindisi, per scoprire come si combatte la guerra ai pirati moderni che ancora infestano i mari del mondo.
