Rolling Thunder is the first solo album by Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart.
Along with Bobby Weir's Ace (1972) and Jerry Garcia's Garcia (1972), Mickey Hart issued his debut solo in 1972. "Rolling Thunder" may also interest Bay Area fans. Backed by John Cipollina and David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service) Grace Slick and Paul Kantner (Jefferson Airplane)Terry Haggerty and Bill Champlin (Sons Of Champlin), Stephen StillsSam Andrew (Big Brother & The Holding Company)Barry Melton (Country Joe & The Fish) The Tower Of Power Horn section, Zakir Husin (Shanti) and Alla Rakha and, of course, Jerry Garcia, Bill Weir and Phil Lesh from the 'Dead', Mickey Hart offers a mix of Indian invocations, rain sequences, Dead-like songs and loose improvisations with oustanding guitars and drums. The results are uniformly inspired and are the closest that the percussionist would come to recording a ‘traditional' pop/rock album until the release of Mickey Hart's Mystery Box (1996) over two decades later. Robert Hunter, Peter Monk and Bob Weir helped Hart helped write some of the materia. The album contains early versions of two songs co-written by Bob Weir that later became Grateful Dead concert staples - "Playing in the Band", and "Greatest Story Ever Told" (called "The Main Ten" and "Pump Song" on this album). Deadhead or naught, classic rock enthusiasts are encouraged to seek out this somewhat obscured classic.
