‘Micro-Evolutions I’ is the first in a series of patterns exploring the step-wise progressive evolution of individual stitch patterns into others, and moves from an Estonian ‘leaf’ pattern to the popular ‘fir cones’ Shetland pattern and back again. The way the ‘stitch lines’ curve, undulate and merge throughout the scarf changes with every pattern repeat, as yarn-overs and decreases move progressively toward the destination pattern. The scarf has a moss stitch border that adds an elegant ‘woven’ look to the edge once blocked.

The photos show some of the iterations through from one stitch pattern to the other. Obviously, the patterns change from one repeat to the next, so not all could be shown!

The pattern includes instructions for two scarf widths, but the width can be easily adjusted for a stole or wrap. The pattern can also be knit on DK on 4mm through 5mm needles, depending on how ‘lacy’ you want the scarf to be. Patterns for both charted and written instructions are available.

It’s a fun and interesting knit (if a little nerdy!) and is great for process knitters.
