Description
“Dark Magus”, recorded in March 1974 at Carnegie Hall, is the beginning of a trilogy of live albums Miles Davis recorded before his semi-retirement, the other two being “Agharta” and “Pangaea”, recorded early 1975. According to Miles’ Saxophone player Dave Liebman, Miles gave no idea on what to play on this night, also recalling the performance as a confusing uneven affair, 100% improvisation. Given the motive, the band performs without a hitch. Miles’ own contributions come in his signature spurts and surges of snarling dissonant organ clusters, soaring clarion vortexes or terse vicious bursts of minimalist trumpet, whilst he conducts the whole affair with shamanistic egoless mastery. For an off-night, it’s pretty mind-blowing stuff. There are loud peaks and quiet valleys on "Dark Magus", but there’s always something going on - an intense and driving set. Q Magazine named “Dark Magus” one of the 50 heaviest albums of all time, next to Slayer, Venom, Maiden, and of course Black Sabbath.
