“My Funny Valentine: Miles Davis in Concert” and “Four & More: Recorded Live in Concert” were both recorded at the Philharmonic Hall - now known as the Avery Fisher Hall - in New York City on February 12th, 1964. “My Funny Valentine”, released in 1965, consists of the slow and medium-tempo numbers while the up-tempo pieces were issued on “Four & More”, but not released until 1966. This remarkable quintet with George Coleman on tenor is often overlooked in the appreciation of Miles Davis’ music, sandwiched as it is between the ‘first great quintet’ (with John Coltrane) and the ‘second great quintet’ (with Wayne Shorter). As a transitional figure in this band, Coleman gives the performance of his life, with robust solos full of gently swinging, yet slightly abstract ideas. His solo on “My Funny Valentine” at this concert is arguably one or the greatest sax solos of all time. Yet even by the high standards set by this group in its live performances there was some special chemistry that night that gave this music and intensity and a lyricism that has seldom been matched in any era of jazz. A great ensemble playing exciting, elegant music.
