DescriptionThe Serbian composer Alexander Moyzes was a student of Vitezslav Novak, and professor of composition at the Bratislava Music Academy. His orchestral works fall deceptively easily on the ear: late Romanticism and Impressionism, moving towards a kind of unsettling atonality at times in his later years; not so much themes and thematic development, as thematic cells that appear and disappear seemingly without order, tempos and moods apparently shifting at will. Moyzes' Tenth Symphony was composed in the late 1970s. It lacks the despair of his Ninth, but is considered by many one of his finest works, exploring the transformative musical language he'd developed over the decades. It is a broadly varied work, and kaleidoscopic in style, though almost always challenging thanks to the composer's ability to ignore expectations.
