____________________________________________

After acquiring the Pro Arte / Schnabel sets recently, I had the idea to include as well two further sets from two other groups: the Roth Quartet and the "old" Curtis Quartet. ... partly to insure that the latter disappear from memory at slightly slower rate than at present

Note: The Roth Quartet performs Mozart's A major Quartet with the Andante (Theme and Variations) as the second movement - instead, as it is is now performed, as the third movement. In addition, the Roth Quartet repeated this ordering again in 1951 when they recorded this work for a second time. Pristine Classics, however - an online purveyor of "original recordings" - thought differently and positions the Andante as the third movement in their version of this recording. At any rate, that I've kept the Roth's positioning of the Andante is not an error - it's this way on all of the Roth's discs of this work. The listener is invited to try listening to this performance with the Andante as both second and third movement - to hear for themselves which positioning works best for the entire effect.
