Mr. Earl Brooks (Kevin Costner) is a buttoned-down family man and business leader who has a secret addiction that even his AA meetings are having a hard time curbing: He's a schizophrenic serial killer with a twisted Jiminy Cricket named Marshall (William Hurt) who keeps popping up to talk him into cruising for a new set of victims. This devoted husband and father really wants to be good, but Marshall is insistent (I guess it's true – a schizophrenic is never really alone), and the latest work of art from "The Thumbprint Killer" turns out to be a little sloppy. There's a witness (Dane Cook), and he's insistent with his blackmail demand: He wants to come along on the next murder. It's oddly entertaining, as long as you lower your threshold of disbelief, and Costner does a nice job of suggesting that Earl is really only himself while conversing and playing with Marshall. He just doesn't happen to like himself, though he dotes on his daughter (Danielle Panabaker), who just may be more like the old man than is healthy. Demi Moore co-stars as the obsessive detective trying to catch the killer, and Marg Helgenberger barely makes an impression as the wife.

The DVD features adequate but uninspiring commentary by director/co-writer Bruce A. Evans and producer/co-writer Raynold Gideon, deleted scenes (including an alternate opening credits sequence) with optional commentary, and a collection of conventional featurettes that survey the production and the themes without probing much beyond the surface: "The Birth of a Serial Killer: A Look at the Writing of Mr. Brooks," "On the Set of Mr. Brooks," and "Murder on Their Minds: Mr. Brooks, Marshall & Mr. Smith.
