Description
SLI 89' Twin-45 Piggyback Flatcars Background Info During the 1960's, intermodal traffic was growing at a rapid rate. At first, trailers were loaded on 75' flatcars. Once 40' trailers became the standard in the 1960's, longer flat cars were needed. The next group of new piggyback flatcars were 85' in length to handle the longer trailers. In parallel, flatcars were also being developed for new autorack equipment to replace the automobile boxcars the railroads were using. Manufacturers found that 89 foot cars were a good length for an autorack as the 4 foot length increase allowed for a significant increase in automobiles the car could carry. It was decided that 89' would become the standard length for both intermodal and autorack cars. By the late 1970's, 45 foot trailers were becoming the standard, so it was good that manufacturers moved to an 89' car length as it was just enough space to fit two 45' trailers. This product is based on the Bethlehem Steel all-purpose design, which could carry not only trailers but containers as well. Several other manufacturers, including Thrall, ACF, and Pullman-Standard, built similar cars to the same spec. These cars are still in service on all North American railroads. Product Features 7 cars in the following liveries: Florida East Coast TTX (3 cars) Southern Railway Southern Pacific Western Pacific Sharing WidgetTrailerScreenshots |
