Description
The Empire Builder is Amtrak's northern transcontinental train between Chicago IL. and Seattle WA., following in the footsteps of the original Great Northern Empire Builder. This train makes its way westward across the northern US states in over the Rocky Mountains via Marias Pass. Once it reaches Spokane WA., a portion of the train splits and heads southwest towards Portland OR. The remaining train continues westward over Steven's Pass on BNSF's Scenic Subdivision ending its journey at the main terminal in Seattle. This particular product is designed to closely replicate this train consist as it would have appeared in 2003, which is in the same timeframe as the BNSF Scenic Route. The locomotives are wearing the new Amtrak Phase V scheme, which was first put in use in 2000 with the delivery of the Acela passenger trains. The Superliner cars are painted in the Phase IV scheme, which was first put in use in 1993. Bringing up the rear is a 60' Express Boxcar. Amtrak purchased a series of boxcars for express shipments in the late 1990's. These cars were to replace the Materials Handling Cars which had handled express shipments on Amtrak since the mid-1980s.
