Description
The EMD F40PH was developed in the 1970's to replace the aging fleet of passenger locomotives in the Amtrak inventory. The first units were built in 1976, and the last order for Amtrak was delivered in 1985. The F40PH is a high horsepower passenger locomotive which provides "hotel power" (HEP), to its trailing coaches, directly from the locomotive prime mover. The majority of F40PH locomotives on Amtrak's roster have been replaced with the newer GE P42 Genesis locomotives, however, these engines are still found in other parts of the country in commuter services and as non-power control units for Amtrak.
