Description

By the end of the 1980's, Amtrak started shopping for new locomotives and rolling stock to augment their fleet. The Bombardier-built Horizon fleet of single level cars were built between 1988-1989 to a similar specification as the popular Comet II commuter cars. The Horizon fleet was designed to complement the existing Amtrak Amfleet single level cars and the two car types can often be seen mixed together in any given passenger train consist. The GE B32-8WH locomotives are based on a freight engine with passenger train gearing. Twenty of these locomotives were delivered to Amtrak in 1991, however, the fleet was not to get any larger. The GE Genesis series passenger locomotives appeared only two years later putting an end to any further interest in the unique wide cab engine.
