BSC 4 Bay 100 Ton Coal Hoppers

Background Info

Bethlehem Steel began mass producing 100 ton coal hoppers in the 1960's for railroads across the United States. This particular example has 4 hopper bays and a
gross rail load of 263000 lbs. While these heavy steel cars have almost all been
replaced by lighter aluminum Bethgon coal gondolas, they are still in service on a
number of railroads. The railcar manufacturing division of Bethlehem Steel became
Johnstown Industries in 1991. Today, they are known as FreightCar America Inc.
