SLI Burlington Northern sD60M Coal Train The Burlington Northern found itself in need of new power at the beginning of the 1990's. They turned to EMD for their latest offering, the 6-axle, 3800 hp, SD60M. Unique to this locomotive was the 3 window North American cab, which was derived from the Canadian National Safety Cab which CN has used on its new locomotives since the early 1970s. The idea behind the wide cab concept was improved crew comfort and safety, particularly in the event of a collision. The reinforced wide cab could withstand over three times the amount of force when compared to the original standard cabs. The wide cab concept quickly became standard on all new GE and EMD freight locomotives built thereafter. The BN SD60M locomotives were initially used in coal train service in the Powder River Basin, and this train set is a reflection of one such consist of the early 1990's, just prior to the removal of cabooses from mainline operation and the advent of aluminum Bethgon coal gondolas.
