SLI Canadian National GP9m Freight Trainset Beginning in the early 1980's, the Canadian National Railway (CN) began an in-house rebuilding program for their aging GP7 and GP9 locomotives. Over 200 of these rebuilt engines were out-shopped from the CN Pointe St-Charles Shops in Montreal, Quebec, in a ten year period ending in the early 1990's. There were two main variants produced during the rebuild program. Both are designated as GP9rm locomotives, however, those in the 4000 series are designed for road switching work, and those in the 7000 series are yard switchers. For several decades, CANAC was the research arm of CN, and the organization behind the development of Beltpack™, a complete locomotive remote control system. CN was the first railroad in North America to implement remote control operations on their system, and by the late 1990's had over 115 Remote Control locomotives working in yards and terminals system wide. The GP9rm Freight Trainset includes a mother/slug remote control yard switching set and 8 different CN and/or CN Subsidiary freight cars. Also included is a stand alone GP9rm in standard long hood forward control configuration. Mother/Slug sets can be found at any railyard on the CN system. Often, they are paired with a second Mother/Slug set and used in Hump Yard Service at major facilities. Stand alone units can be found working in yards and industrial areas. While Microsoft Train Simulator does not allow for a true replication of remote control operations, Stream Lines has attempted to give the feel of running the trainset from the front platform using a remote control device.
