Description
SLI Canadian National SD75I Laser Trainset In 1995, the Canadian National Railway (CN) purchased 26 SD70I locomotives from EMD. By 1996, the SD75I model was available so the remaining CN order of 174 units shifted from the SD70I to the SD75I locomotive. The SD75I would be the primary mainline workhorse for CN from the mid-1990's until introduction of the SD70M-2 locomotives in 2005. Today, these locomotives are still leading trains system wide, pulling everything from coal drags to the west coast, or high speed intermodal trains from Montreal to Chicago. In the early 1990's, CN began a marketing campaign promoting their inter-city short haul intermodal service. The service was dubbed "LASER", and a large number of 48' containers and trailers were painted in the sharp blue and red livery. The LASER trains operated primarily between Montreal, Toronto and Chicago, however, the equipment was frequently sent to all points of the CN system. In 1990, Trenton Works Ltd., following specifications developed at CN's Transcona Shops in Winnipeg MB, developed a 5 unit articulated well car set with 70 ton swing motion trucks on the end units, and 100 ton heavy duty trucks at the articulated joints. These cars, with 48' well capacity, could handle containers as well as highway trailers. ACF trailer hitches were installed on each platform, thus the majority of LASER trains had a mixture of 48' containers and trailers. Sadly, the design of the wells could not handle the weight of double stacked containers so these cars would spend their working years limited to single stack loading only. Most of these cars have been replaced with higher capacity well cars, however, they are still in service This product represents a CN LASER intermodal train as it would have appeared in the late 1990's.
