Description
SLI Conrail Tropicana Juice Train In 1970, Tropicana Products began shipping fresh orange juice by rail from their manufacturing facility in Bradenton, Florida to their eastern distribution facility in Kearny, New Jersey. Initially, ony one train per week operated in each direction, but by the following year, that number doubled. The train travelled over the Seaboard System (SBD) and Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac (RF&P) as far as Alexandria, Virginia where Penn Central took over the remainder of the trip to New Jersey. By the end of the 1970's, Penn Central had become part of Conrail, and by the early 1990's, both SBD and RF&P had become part of CSX. In 1999, Conrail was absorbed by both CSX and Norfolk Southern, and today, the Juice Train operates, entirely over CSX trackage, between Bradenton, FL and the new Tropicana facility in Jersey City, NJ. The Stream Lines version of the Juice Train is based on late 1990's operations, when Conrail still handled the eastern portion of the trip. This product includes 3 EMD SD60i locomotives, and a consist of Fruit Grower Express (FGE) 60' insulated Tropicana boxcars. The Juice Train is one of the most popular unit trains of perishable goods in North America, and continues to run to this day. The motive power is now CSX, and the majority of the FGE boxcars have been replaced with newer cars.
