SLI CSX AC4400CW Coal Train

CSX Transportation has over 600 General Electric AC4400CW locomotives, which places them as one of the largest operator of this locomotive type, second only to the Union Pacific. They have their own locomotive classification scheme, and on the CSX, these units are referred to as CW44AC. They also have a selection of these units classified as CW44AH. These are also AC4400CW locomotives, however, they have tractive effort control computer software.

CSX moves a lot of coal, from mines in the eastern United States, to various customers throughout their system. Many of the electrical power plants in the Eastern US are coal fired, so railroads like CSX become critical to the operation of these mines. Included with this locomotive set is a consist of Johnstown America AutoFlood hoppers. These hoppers, built out of aluminum, began appearing in the mid-1990s. What makes these cars so unique is that they can be emptied by using the automated hopper door opening mechanism to open the hopper bays on the bottom of the car. Iif the customer site has a rotary dumper, they have a rotary coupler as well to premit them to be unloaded in the dumper.

While new GE Evolution series locomotives, such as the ES44AC, continue to be delivered, the AC4400CW will continue to play an active role for CSX for years to come.
