Description
SLI Southern Pacific SD70M Trainset In 1994, the Southern Pacific Railroad purchased 25 SD70M locomotives from EMD, and they were one of the first railroads to embrace the new locomotive series, following the success of the SD60 series, which the Southern Pacific opted not to purchase. The SD70M is a 4300 hp 6-axle road locomotive which is designed to haul manifest and intermodal traffic. When the Union Pacific acquired the Southern Pacific in 1996, these locomotives were put to work alongside the close to 1500 such locomotives already on the Union Pacific roster. The SD70 series was highly successful for EMD, and ultimately led to the next generation of SD70 locomotives, the SD70ACe and SD70M-2. In the mid-1980s, Gunderson and Thrall Car were competing for the upper hand in the ever growing double stack container car marketplace. Thrall had developed the LoPac 2000, and Gunderson, the Twin Stack. The Twin Stack, which is included in this product, is a five unit articulated set and has bulkheads on each end of the car to secure the container in the upper position. Thrall determined that the locking mechanisms which were already being used to secure containers on ships could also be used to secure the container in the upper position. Ultimately, the Twin Stack would be replaced by the Maxi Stack I, which was built without the bulkheads. The Twin Stack cars are still in use today, most of which are leased to various North American railroads by TTX Company. This product represents a Southern Pacific double stack train as it would have appeared in the mid-1990's, shortly after the purchase of the SD70M locomotives, and prior to the acquisition by the Union Pacific Railroad.
