"Hey Hey The Gangs All Here"
Muhammad Ali and Sam Cook Duet live on TV 1964
The finished Audio lists at 458kbs.
Muhammad Ali (then, still Cassius Clay) in a duet with Sam Cooke, 1964, for British TV. Grandstand Saturday, March 7, 1964
Grandstand was a sports anthology show on the BBC in England, very similar in format to ABC’s Wide World of Sports here in the U.S. The first broadcast was on October 11, 1958 and it concluded a 48-year run in January 2007. On Tuesday, February 25, 1964, Sam was in Miami where he attended the Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali)-Sonny Liston fight. He was accompanied by his wife, Barbara, Allen Klein and his wife, Betty, and J. W. Alexander (Guralnick p. 554). Following Clay’s victory he is mobbed in the ring and surrounded by sports reporters. During an interview, Clay spots Sam in the crowd, calls him up into the ring and introduces him as the “world’s greatest rock ‘n roll singer.” This clip has been seen on numerous occasions, particularly whenever there is a retrospective of Muhammad Ali’s boxing career. One week later, Sam hooked up with Clay again in New York City, where Sam produced Clay’s rendition of the song, “Hey, Hey, The Gang’s All Here.” Very
likely the next day, March 4, Sam went with Clay to a New York television studio where Clay conducted a Transatlantic interview with BBC Sports commentator Harry Carpenter. Midway through the interview, Carpenter can hear Sam talking off camera and he asks Clay who is there in the studio with him. Clay pulls Sam into the camera frame and then says to Carpenter, “As you can see, like me, he’s awful pretty.” Sam and Clay then proceed to give Carpenter a little a capella sample of the “Gang’s All Here” recording. Clay appears to be totally mesmerized by Sam and looks up at him with longing eyes as if he were just another of Sam’s teenaged fans. The March 7 broadcast date is based on the fact that Grandstand aired on Saturday afternoons, and this would have been the first Saturday following the interview date. The footage can be seen on the Sam Cooke: Legend DVD. Samuel Cook (January 22, 1931 -- December 11, 1964), better known under the stage name Sam Cooke, was an American gospel, R&B, soul, and pop singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He is considered to be one of the pioneers and founders of soul music. He is commonly known as the King of Soul for his distinctive vocal abilities and influence on the modern world of music. His contribution in pioneering soul music led to the rise
of Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and popularized the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown. Cooke had 30 U.S. top 40 hits between 1957 and 1964, and a further three after his death. Major hits like "You Send Me", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "Cupid", "Chain Gang", "Wonderful World", and "Twistin' the Night Away" are some of his most popular songs. Cooke was also among the first modern black performers and composers to attend to the business side of his musical career. He founded both a record label and a publishing company as an extension of his careers as a singer and composer. He also took an active part in the American Civil Rights Movement. On December 11, 1964, Cooke was fatally shot by the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los
Angeles, California, at the age of 33. At the time, the courts ruled that Cooke was drunk and distressed, and that the manager had killed Cooke in what was later ruled a justifiable homicide. Since that time, the circumstances of his death have been widely questioned, the Manager was deemed a Madam and the girl with Sam that night was considered a prostitute and was later arrested for murdering another man and sent to prison. While Sams personal belongings i.e. money/jewelry turned up missing that night.
Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr.; January 17, 1942) is an American former professional
boxer, philanthropist and social activist. Considered a cultural icon, Ali has both been
idolized. That Ali perceived his recording projects as less of the comic sideshow
Columbia distributed them as is evident from a British television appearance he made
shortly after the startling victory over Liston. Appearing with Cooke in an interview
segment for the BBC sports anthology show Grandstand in March 1964, Ali prompted his
singing compatriot into an impromptu a cappella performance of "The Gang's All Here," and the look of sincerity on the champ's face betrays the seriousness of his musical intentions."Mandela was a former fighter, so there was a kindred spirit there," DiNicola said by phone Thursday evening. "There was always that connection." Thousands greeted Ali on his arrival in South Africa, he recalled. Ali's visit came as the country was mourning the assassination of Chris Hani, another anti-apartheid leader who was killed in 1993. Ali visited Hani's family and attended the funeral, DiNicola said. "It had a deep emotional impact on the mourners and the country that Muhammad happened to be there at that moment," he said. "It gave them, I think, a level of comfort."

Lyrics

"The gang's all here"

Hey, hey, the gang's all here
We're gonna end the fun

Hey, hey, the gang's all here
Wer'e gonna swing that gun

Do it again now,

Hey, hey, the gang's all here
We're gonna end the fun

Hey, hey, the gang's all here
Wer'e gonna swing that gun
