Recorded in Toronto and guided by producer Chris Stringer (Timber Timbre, Ohbijou), the new album shows off their unconventional instrumentation: lead singer John Showman drives the band with his dynamic fiddle playing; guitarist “Champagne” James Robertson uses a raft of pedals to astonishing effect; drummer Roman Tome sets the groove on a hybrid kit which includes a sawblade cymbal and goat hooves shakers; and, freewheeling bassist Ben Whiteley plays his acoustic double bass to abandon. From beginning to finish this is not only a refreshingly cool album to take in, but an inspiring one as well. There aren't that many artists out there that are breaking the mold of what country music should sound like in any form. New Country Rehab is living up to their name. Not only have they rehabilitated my faith that original bands still exist - they have resurrected my hopes that this great genre of music, call it Americana, Insurgent Country or whatever (!) can continue on and remain innovative.
