New Riders of the Purple Sage is an American psychedelic country rock band. The group emerged from the ‘hippie’ rock scene in San Francisco, California in 1969, with its original lineup including several members of the Grateful Dead. Their best known song is "Panama Red". The band is sometimes referred to as the New Riders, or as NRPS.

The roots of the New Riders can be traced back to the early 1960s folk/bohemian/beatnik scene in San Francisco, where future Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia, often played gigs with like-minded guitarist David Nelson in coffeehouses. Garcia, in the meantime, formed the Grateful Dead, then known as the Warlocks, with an acquaintance, blues singer Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.

By 1966, the Merry Pranksters-led Acid Tests were in full swing in the SF Bay Area, with the Dead serving as house band. Around this time, Garcia was inspired to take up the pedal steel guitar, and Dawson and Garcia began playing coffeehouse concerts together when the Grateful Dead were not touring. The New Riders came together as a band in 1969, often opening shows for the Grateful Dead with Jerry Garcia playing steel guitar and banjo as guest in their sets.

The band, in its original format, peaked in popularity in 1973 with The Adventures of Panama Red and the accompanying single, "Panama Red", an FM radio staple of the time that alluded to a well-known strain of marijuana. The Adventures of Panama Red was the group's lone gold album. NRPS has continued to tour and record albums as a band since that time with various changes in personnel, but included here are its first four albums recorded by its original line-up.

New Riders of the Purple Sage is the only studio album by the New Riders to feature co-founder Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead on pedal steel guitar. Mickey Hart and Commander Cody play drums and piano, respectively, on two tracks - "Dirty Business" and "Last Lonely Eagle".

Powerglide (1972)

Powerglide is the second album by the New Riders of the Purple Sage. The music is a psychedelic hybrid of country rock, and includes guest performances by musicians Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann from the Grateful Dead, along with noted session player Nicky Hopkins. The album contains six original tunes by the band, plus covers such as "I Don't Need No Doctor", "Hello Mary Lou", and "Willie and the Hand Jive".
Powerglide was the first New Riders album to feature Buddy Cage, who had replaced Garcia as the New Riders' pedal steel guitar player. It was the band's highest-charting album, reaching number 33 on the Billboard 200.

Gypsy Cowboy (1972)

Gypsy Cowboy is the third album by the New Riders of the Purple Sage. It was recorded and released in December, 1972. The album includes six original songs by John Dawson and three by Dave Torbert, plus cover versions of "She's No Angel" and "Long Black Veil". One single was released in conjunction with the album - "Groupie" / "She's No Angel".

The Adventures of Panama Red (1973)

The Adventures of Panama Red is the fourth psychedelic country rock album by the New Riders of the Purple Sage, released in 1973. It is widely regarded as one of the group's best efforts, and reached number 55 on the Billboard charts.

The album includes two songs written by Peter Rowan - "Panama Red", which became a popular radio hit, and "Lonesome L.A. Cowboy". Another song, "Kick in the Head", was written by Robert Hunter. Donna Jean Godchaux and Buffy Sainte-Marie contribute background vocals on several tracks.
