ABOUT THE BOOK
A brilliant and original fiction debut set in the exotic world of 1930s British theatre March 1934. Revered mystery writer Josephine Tey is traveling from Scotland to London for the final week of her celebrated play "Richard of Bordeaux," But joy turns to horror when her arrival coincides with the murder of a young woman she had befriended on the train ride, and Tey quickly finds herself plunged into a mystery as puzzling as any of those in her own works.
Detective Inspector Archie Penrose is convinced that the killing is connected to her play. "Richard of Bordeaux" has been the surprise hit of the season, with pacifist themes that strike a chord in a world still haunted by war. Now, however, it seems that Tey could become the victim of her own success, as her reputation--and even her life--is put at risk.
A second murder confirms Penrose's suspicions that somewhere among this flamboyant theatre set is a ruthless and spiteful killer. Together, Penrose and Tey must confront their own ghosts in search of someone who will stop at nothing.
"An Expert in Murder" is both a tribute to one of the most enduringly popular writers of crime and a richly atmospheric detective novel in its own right.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nicola Upson was born in Suffolk and read English at Downing College, Cambridge. She has worked in theatre and as a freelance journalist, and is the author of two non-fiction works and the recipient of an Escalator Award from the Arts Council England. Her debut novel, An Expert in Murder, was the first in a series of crime novels to feature Josephine Tey, one of the leading authors of Britain's age of crime-writing. The book was dramatised by BBC Scotland for Woman's Hour, and praised by PD James as marking 'the arrival of a new and assured talent'.
Nicola lives with her partner in Cambridge and Cornwall, which was the setting for her second novel, Angel With Two Faces. The third book in the series, Two for Sorrow, was followed by Fear in the Sunlight and, most recently, The Death of Lucy Kyte. Taken together, they paint an atmospheric picture of England between the wars, contrasting the stark reality of life in the 1930s and 40s with the glamorous world of theatre and film and featuring a variety of real characters, from the Edwardian murderers, Amelia Sach and Annie Walters, to the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Her research for the books has included many conversations with people who lived through the period and who knew Josephine Tey well, most notably Sir John Gielgud.

ABOUT THE READER
Sandra Duncan was born in Liverpool and trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After drama school she performed many roles in repertory. In the 1970s she was invited to South Africa to appear in a play and stayed for nineteen years and won fifteen "best actress" awards.
Sandra returned to England in 1993, experiencing a huge cultural shock and continued her work in the theatre.
Sandra played Mrs. Birling in the Royal National Theatre production of J.B. Priestly's An Inspector Calls which successfully toured Australia and other parts of the English-speaking world throughout the 2000s.
Like many theatre performers, Sandra Duncan has also appeared on television, both in England and during her life in South Africa.
