Nell'attesa, lei trova, in una libreria, un libro intitolato The Number 23, scritto da un certo Topsy Kretts (gioco di parole per Top Secrets), quindi lo regala al marito, in occasione del suo compleanno. Walter inizia a leggere il libro, che descrive un inquietante caso di omicidio e narra le vicende del Detective Fingerling e della passione per la dark lady Fabrizia. Inizialmente incuriosito, col procedere della lettura, Walter trova delle sorprendenti analogie con la sua infanzia. Scopre anche il legame che la sua vita ha con il numero 23. Egli ne mette al corrente moglie e figlio e cerca dal dott. Isaac French, amico di Agatha, una spiegazione scientifica alla "teoria" del numero 23. Walter si identificherà sempre più col protagonista della narrazione e l’ossessione di Fingerling, per il potere che si nasconde nel numero 23, diventerà sua. Egli entrerà in una terribile spirale ossessivo-paranoica che lo porterà a vedere il 23 in qualsiasi cosa. Una notte, in seguito a terribili incubi, dove sogna di assassinare la moglie per gelosia, cercherà definitivamente di scoprire cosa si cela dietro il libro ed il suo fantomatico scrittore, alla
