Rien Du Tout Pour Soprano, Symphonie Et Basse Continue She possesses a voice which can be described only as truly amazing. She has impeccable control, a vivid dynamic range and an exceptionally powerful top register, which on this disc results in a simply dazzling performance of 'Der Hölle Rache' ("Die Zauberflöte") . . . to anyone familiar with her earlier work she seems here to have developed an altogether more rounded tone, especially in the lower register, and has developed the rare ability to inject into her performance vocal characterizations which, to a large extent, nullify the need to see these operatic characters in the flesh . . . a glorious display of vocal versatility . . . Anyone expecting a simple sequence of love-struck females will be in for a very rude shock. These women take us through the whole gamut of emotions and passions involved in love: from the sheer bliss of Silvia's pure love in Haydn's "L'isola disabitata' to the bitter anguish of Euridice in his "Orfeo ed Euridice", with some fascinating diversion thrown in along the way. It's almost impossible to relate these women to the robust figure of Volpino, a wonderfully amusing trouser role in Haydn's "Lo speziale" . . . For sheer versatility, virtuosity and vividness of characterization, this is a matchless disc.
