“American Upmix Revolution – The Best of Paul Revere & The Raiders in 5.1 DTS”
Upmix by Sansdancer This is my compilation of the hits of Paul Revere & The Raiders, upmixed to 5.1 DTS using the SPEC method and tools found on surroundbyus.com. This upmix can only be played on PCs and HT/audio systems capable of decoding and playing DTS files. You can also play this with Foobar 2000 (with the DTS dll installed) or burn it to a CD using the cue file and ImgBurn. This is a re-post I previously had up on the "D". Paul Revere & The Raiders were one of the most successful Rock groups of the ‘60s. They had harmonies like the Beach Boys and The Beatles with a Punk delivery like the Rolling Stones. Dick Clark chose them to be the house band on his “Where The Action Is” afternoon TV show and the exposure paid off in huge sales of their records. (Later on the show was renamed “Happening ‘68” and then “It’s Happening”.) From 1965 through the early ‘70s the group charted over two dozen singles, the biggest in 1971 with John Loudermilk’s “Indian Reservation”. (Don Farden had a million selling hit with the song a year earlier.) Their trademark Revolutionary War period costumes and crazy stage antics made them both a fun and entertaining live act. They went through several member changes (including Freddy Weller who went on to a successful solo Country career), but the main driving force of keyboardist Paul Revere and vocalist Mark Lindsey shaped the direction of the band. Eventually Mark Lindsey left the band and had success as a solo act. Paul Revere still has a version of the group that still performs in Las Vegas and various casinos, fairs and music venues across the US. These tracks were sourced from three high quality redbook CD anthologies. Note: Some of these songs are only available in mono (in their original ‘hit’ versions), but to omit them would mean leaving out some key Paul Revere & The Raiders hits. Two of the songs are available in stereo in remixed form and I did use one of those remixes because I felt the remix kept the instrument levels accurate to the original mono version. The other one I rejected because IMHO the remix loses the ‘hook’ of the song. (Like burying the harmonica on “Love Me Do”.) I “enhanced” the mono tracks a bit but you will probably be able to tell which ones are in mono. (If not, then I guess I did a good job.) I approached this project with my usual quadraphonic sensibilities, trying to make each channel as discrete as possible while retaining the characteristics of the original recordings even though you are hearing them in a 5.1 configuration. For best results you should have matched front and rear speakers. Overall, I am pleased with the final product, but tell me what you think.
