DeLamotte presents a two part study that intetprets the Gothic "myth" as both the original creators of the genre and as later writers in the Gothic tradition used it. She argues external society (both personal and institutional relationships) shaped the internal-intellectual world of nineteenth-century writers. Thus, the "perils of the soul" at night reflect daylight stresses of money, social rank, and work.

Part 1 analyzes works by several writers, mostly women, in terms of such aspects as narrative method, settings, and allegorical techniques.

Part 2 further examines why the Gothic has been so preeminently a woman's genre. The Brontës recieve extensive coverage.
