Neal (Steve Martin) is een hardwerkende zakenman, die met Thanksgiving graag bij zijn gezin wil zijn. Als zijn vliegtuig door slechte weersomstandigheden tot landen wordt gedwongen, probeert Neal alles om toch nog thuis te komen. Daarbij krijgt hij de hopeloze kletskous Del Griffith (John Candy) op zijn nek, die koste wat kost wil helpen om de zakenman op tijd thuis te krijgen. Neal heeft daar eigenlijk weinig zin in, maar lijkt door het noodlot gebonden aan de man. Samen belanden ze van de ene hachelijke situatie in de andere, en het is maar de vraag of Neal zijn gezin nog ooit terug zal zien...

In New York the marketing executive Neal Page wants to travel home to Chicago for Thanksgiving. He has difficulties getting a taxi and his flight is cancelled. He meets in the airport the clumsy and talkative shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith who has taken his cab and they travel side-by-side to Chicago. However the bad weather shuts down O'Hare Airport and they land at Wichita, Kansas. They both want to go to Chicago and they decide to travel together. Along their journey Neal changes his viewpoint about Del Griffith and his own behavior.
