Description

Cyril Cusack reads, in a properly devotional manner, poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins.

Hopkins' verse with its elaborately wrought rhythm and assonance is intense, jagged, alive and exciting, its sensuousness seeming at times almost physical . It is the record of a man wrestling with his soul. It looks backward to the English Metaphysicals and forward to the twentieth century modernists.

This is a rip from the original Caedmon source (TC 1111), not to be confused with the thin sounding audio of Cusack on the mp3 sites. (try FREEGAL for example) To follow will be Hopkins read by Paul Scofield, Michael Redgrave, Robert Speaight etc. Naxos has an excellent CD of Hopkins (for which go to -
